I recall meeting up with my mentor, Ivan Herrera, at Feagley Realtors, about a year ago, to connect with more businessmen and further explore the use of Economics on a real estate company. From discussing when the housing market will collapse to how we can make more optimal decisions in our everyday lives, there was a great exchange of knowledge as Jerry Feagley, owner of Feagley Realtors, and Ivan spoke with each other. I, instantly, realized that there is a great deal of knowledge out there and I knew very little.
The best takeaway from the conversation was how economics relates to the personal choices we make on a daily basis - renting apartments, buying houses and even when changing lanes in the freeway (optimization - which lane has the best opportunity cost?).

Business has always interested me but the majority of bootcamps in the Bay Area either cost a great deal of money or have age restrictions. As Don came to give presentations to our schools about the Ivy League Connection, I knew this was the opportunity that I had been seeking for the past 4 months! And the best part - it was FREE - but only with a very competitive application process that included an essay, interview, and personal statement!
Three months after the presentation, I was chosen as one of the four students to represent the WCCUSD at the University of Chicago and without hesitation I chose to study Microeconomics. The past 5 months, though, has engaged me in a good amount of work. While the daily dose of school stress was rather exhausting, meeting up with the Chicago and Vanderbilt cohorts seems to always refresh me. I am still having a hard time considering that there is less than 11 hours before we depart for Chicago on Southwest Airlines!
I must say that changing my sleep schedule was a major issue. As it is summer, I was sleeping at 2 AM in the morning, and waking up after 10. As Chicago's time zone is two hours ahead, I had to sleep 6 hours ahead to prepare myself properly for Chicago. Though it was difficult, I am glad to say we persevered through it.
Even so, packing was definitely not a hassle! Being excited for UChicago, I started packing a week prior to the start of the trip. I finished packing in 2 days! When I weighed my suitcase, again, an hour ago, surprisingly it did not even exceed 36 pounds. Majority of it, though, was just clothes!
My mom is probably going to cry as she says her goodbyes for the next 3 weeks; she is very emotional but excited for my long journey. After immigrating from Nepal, it was never too easy for my family, but as she sees her two children grow up and strive to achieve academic excellence, for any mother it must feel very rewarding. Though this is only the 2nd time that I will be away from her for more than 2 weeks, I feel very excited and the dopamine levels in my system are very high!
I am looking forward to applying Economics to my personal life. As an example, if I am the President of a club at my school, I am going to learn about effective marketing strategies to recruit and retain more members. While skimming through my textbook, I have already picked up a few insights on how economic knowledge improves our personal lives. Once again, though, there is so much knowledge that is out there, beyond this book, and I know very little.
